Speech therapy works to help children communicate. This could
be either through use of signing or verbal communication. Speech
therapy provides children with the communication tools needed to
decrease their level of frustration.
Speech therapists work with children who have speech delays as
a result of autism, developmental delay, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome,
etc. Speech therapy helps children effectively communicate using
augmentative communication
devices. These help a children communicate with their surroundings
if they are not able to vocalize but can understand what they want
to say to people. This can be as simple as a button that is touched
to say a few phrases or as sophisticated as a machine that can have
multiple items and screens programmed for conversations.
In addition to communication skills, speech therapists at Sensory
Solutions also work on feeding mechanics for children who have a
limited diet beyond being “picky
eaters.” They also work on swallowing for children with
feeding tubes, cleft palate and other feeding
issues. This can involve teaching them to tolerate food in their
mouths and teaching them how to swallow.

Therapy Check List to see if your child may need our assistance.
