Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2)
The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule: Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a play-based evaluation for children 12 months to adulthood. It is a standardized diagnostic test for diagnosing and assessing autism. It is considered to be a gold standard; in diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Your child must be ambulatory (able to walk) to participate in this assessment. He/she/they/them do not need to be verbal. The assessment contains five modules, which offer activities specifically designed for different ages and developmental levels.
Prior to the evaluation, you will be asked to schedule a language evaluation for your child, which will be completed on a different day, for the therapists to accurately assess your child’s language level during the ADOS-2. A sensory profile will be sent to prior to the ADOS-2 which will need to be filled out for the occupational therapist to fully understand your child’s sensory needs. Both evaluations (language evaluation and sensory profile) will ensure a comprehensive report for both you and your child’s pediatrician.
On the day of testing, parents of young children may be asked to sit in during the evaluation. In contrast, older children will most likely complete the evaluation independently. The ADOS-2 generally takes 60 minutes to complete. Recommendations for therapy will be provided directly following the evaluation. The evaluation will be written up and sent to your child’s pediatrician within one week of the testing.
Once the evaluation is sent to your child’s pediatrician, the pediatrician may sign the report and provide a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder based on the results of the evaluation, or, he/she will refer for further testing.
Why choose the ADOS-2? The protocol consists of a series of structured and semi-structured tasks, that involve social interaction between the examiner and the person under assessment. The examiner observes and identifies segments of the individual’s behavior and assigns these to predetermined observational categories. Categorized observations are subsequently combined to produce quantitative scores for analysis. Research-determined cut-offs identify the potential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, allowing a standardized assessment of autism characteristics.
