The ADOS-2 is a play-based assessment used to evaluate Autism Spectrum characteristics in children and adults of all ages. The assessment contains five modules, which offer activities specifically designed for different ages and developmental levels. Children as young as one year through adolescence may be considered for ADOS assessment.
On testing day, parents of young children may be asked to sit-in during the assessment, while older children will likely complete assessment independently. The ADOS generally takes between 45-60 minutes to complete and the examiner will provide a brief summary of observations following the assessment. Each family will then receive a report which includes the child’s strengths and areas of need, along with a most appropriate diagnosis and recommendations.
A new family seeking ADOS evaluation may be asked to schedule a behavioral health intake appointment first, so that the examiner may select the correct assessment module for the child. The examiner may also suggest that the child complete speech and/or occupational evaluation prior to diagnosis. There are some cases where a child may be referred to another organization to complete a full psychoeducational evaluation.
Download our Red Flag lists for Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, or Occupational Therapy if you are still unsure if your child would benefit from therapy. If you still have questions please give us a call or set up an evaluation.
